About Cats of Essaouira

Celebrating the beauty, spirit, and resilience of Morocco’s cats.

I’m an American who first came to Essaouira, Morocco, in December 2024 after spending three months in Portugal. What was meant to be a short visit quickly became something much bigger.

I fell in love with this seaside city — its winding streets, ocean air, and especially its street cats. Along the way, I connected with locals and fellow expats, many of whom were already caring for these cats.

As I explored, I began photographing the cats and sharing the images with family and friends back home in the United States. It was my daughter who suggested turning those photos into a calendar. From there, the idea grew into something meaningful: combining my love of photography with supporting local rescue efforts.

A portion of the proceeds from every calendar goes directly to APAN, a trusted cat refuge here in Essaouira. For me, this project is a way to build a bridge — so that cat lovers in America can help protect Morocco’s most vulnerable animals, while also bringing home a little piece of Essaouira’s charm.
